The village of Vermont was founded in 1835 by James and Joseph Crail. Quaker settlers from Pennsylvania formed what was to be the commercial core of Vermont, Il. The village grew to be a thriving social and economic hub of Fulton County. By 1870, Vermont was an important rail junction for two railroads. Many of the present day business district's buildings retain the character of Vermont's post Civil-War business boom. The row of stately brick mansions which dot the length of the "Magnificent Mile" along West and East Fifth Street reflect the vitality of these early days which carried forward to the 20th century.
Today Vermont, Il has a population on 792.
